As of May 1, 2020, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) - Driver and Motor Vehicles Services, has increased the bonding requirement for all OR Motor Vehicle Dismantler's licenses to $100,000.  It is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle dismantler business in the state without the proper licensure in place through ODOT.

Who is required to have a Dismantler Certificate in the state of Oregon?

Anyone who is in the business of buying, selling or processing motor vehicles for the purpose of salvaging, dismantling or destroying the motor vehicle must be licensed as a Dismantler in the state of Oregon.  

A Dismantler Certificate allows the licensee to conduct the business of:

• Buying, selling, dealing in or processing vehicles for the purpose of destroying, salvaging or substantially altering in form; or
• Dealing in or processing vehicle major component parts that are stocked in the inventory of the business. (not required as long as the buying, selling, dealing in, or processing of major component parts is not part of a business selling new vehicles or repairing vehicles)

As part of the licensing process all Licensed Dismantlers must post and maintain a completed and signed DMV Surety Bond (DMV Form 735-373) in the amount of $100,000 for the term of 1 year.  Annual bond renewals are required to maintain compliance with OAR 735-152 and ORS 822-110.

How much does a Dismantler License Surety bond cost in the state of Oregon?

This particular license type is typically 1% of the bond amount for an annual term.  This is the base surety bond premium for applicants who meet the surety company's credit and financial requirements.  Accounts that don't qualify or have credit issues can still be issued; however, you can expect to pay a higher premium.
