Why do I need an Illinois (IL) Certificate of Title Surety Bond? 

If you do not have acceptable evidence of ownership for your Motor Vehicle, Boat, Motor Home, Mobile Home, Motorcycle or other titled property, you have the ability to provide the State of Illinois with a Certificate of Title Surety Bond in order to get a new title so you can register your vehicle.  The Bond amount must be in an amount equal to one and one-half times the current wholesale value of the vehicle.

A written appraisal of the current wholesale value of the vehicle from a licensed new or used motor vehicle dealer (including motorcycle, mobile home and trailer dealers), a licensed rebuilder (for salvage or junk vehicles only), a licensed real estate agent (for mobile homes only) or an officer of an antique vehicle club or association (for antique vehicles only). The appraisal also may be obtained from a used vehicle price guide, supported by copies of the front cover and pertinent pages of the guide.  Wholesale value is trade-in value of a vehicle or the value of a vehicle sold between licensed dealers and not at retail.

Be aware - There is NO minimum bond amount required, however The Secretary of State’s office retains the right to question any appraisal that is not appropriate for the transaction.  If you have to amend your bond for an incorrect amount, there will be a rider fee of $25 charged plus any additional premium that may be required.
